A
gricultural waste converted into sustainable materials
The Galician company BirdMind has launched an innovative production plant in Pontevedra that converts rice shells – a high volume agricultural waste – into ecological boards for furniture and interior design.
The result is a resistant, fireproof, waterproof and formaldehyde-free material, with virtually no environmental impact.
A 100% renewable process
The factory works entirely with solar energy and biomass, and uses the rice shell as a raw material to generate a recyclable and biodegradable “vegetative wood”.
Unlike traditional boards, these do not contain toxic glues or petrochemical derivatives, and are completely hypoallergenic.
Industrial applications
BirdMind products are already being used in contract furniture, modular construction, kitchens, coatings and commercial design.
The project is aligned with the European circular economy objectives and represents an example of the recovery of agricultural waste within the forestry sector.
