The GREiA research group of the University of Lleida is carrying out a pioneering project in the field of sustainable construction: the manufacture and testing of prefabricated wooden houses with biological materials and phase change components (Phase Change Materials – PCM).
This approach, within the European project Biobuild, aims to reduce the energy consumption of buildings by up to 20%, both in new construction and in rehabilitation.

Technology applied to wood

Phase change materials allow heat storage and release according to the thermal needs of the building. Integrated into wooden panels, these systems improve thermal inertia and reduce dependence on active heating or cooling systems.

In addition, the project is committed to the use of biological and renewable products, reinforcing the circularity of the construction sector and minimizing the carbon footprint.

Impact on the market

The results of the project could mark a before and after in the construction of high energy performance wood, especially in Mediterranean and continental climatic areas.
The Biobuild project is funded by the European Union (Horizon Europe) and has a duration of four years.
